Mobilising Global Finance for Climate Action

Sean Kidney
CEO, Climate Bonds Initiative
The ABLF Talks |  The ABLF City | June 10, 2021

Speaker Introduction

Sean Kidney, CEO and Co-Founder of the Climate Bonds Initiative (CBI), is globally recognised as a transformative force in sustainable finance. A lifelong campaigner for directing capital flows toward climate-compatible development, he has played a crucial role in aligning markets with science. Under his stewardship, CBI has emerged as the authoritative body in developing and standardising green bond frameworks, financial instruments now moving trillions into renewable energy, climate-resilient infrastructure, and low-carbon innovation. Operating in over 70 countries, the organisation is also actively shaping sustainable taxonomies, advising sovereign issuances, and reforming financial regulations in line with the Paris Agreement.

Mr Kidney serves as an expert advisor to major financial institutions, central banks, and multilateral bodies including the UN and G20. At the ABLF Talks session, Mr Kidney delivered a compelling vision, arguing that incrementalism is obsolete. A radical rethinking of finance, governed by scientific targets and institutional cooperation, is the only path forward. His message was urgent yet pragmatic: climate alignment must be designed into our economic systems, not left to the margins of policy or personal conscience.
