Executive Summary
The COVID-19 pandemic not only exposed but also exacerbated deep-rooted gender disparities across sectors, pushing millions of women and girls to the economic and social margins. In an urgent and impassioned address at the ABLF Talks Live, Zohra Khan of UN Women argued that gender equality must be positioned as central to both economic recovery and sustainable development. Drawing from UN Women’s analysis of over 2,500 fiscal policy measures and rapid gender assessments conducted globally, Khan revealed stark data on rising poverty, hunger, domestic violence, and educational loss among women. This white paper unpacks her insights, outlining the critical importance of financing care work, institutionalizing gender-responsive budgeting, and building intersectoral partnerships to ensure that women are not left behind in the rebuilding process. Inclusion, she affirmed, is not optional, it is foundational to global resilience.
